An Iranian unmanned aerial vehicle struck the runway of a British military base in Cyprus early Monday.
Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides disclosed that the drone incident occurred shortly after midnight when a Shahed aircraft crashed within the British military facilities at Akrotiri.
He said the impact caused limited structural damage but no reported casualties.
The British government confirmed the strike.
Foreign secretary Yvette Cooper stated that the unmanned drone hit the runway area of the base, adding that security protocols were immediately activated.
She noted that authorities were unable to release detailed operational information but assured that precautionary measures were in place to safeguard personnel and infrastructure.
The European union responded swiftly to the development.
Ursula von der Leyen, European commission President reaffirmed the bloc’s solidarity with Cyprus, a member state of the EU.
Although Cyprus was not described as the intended target, von der Leyen stressed that the union would stand firmly behind its members against any threat to their security.
Christodoulides emphasised that Cyprus was not participating in any military action and had no intention of becoming involved in the escalating hostilities.
He described the broader region as facing severe geopolitical instability and an unprecedented crisis.
The strike comes after Britain agreed to allow the United States to utilise its military bases for what officials characterised as defensive operations aimed at neutralising Iranian missile systems and launch platforms.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer clarified that the United Kingdom did not take part in initial strikes against Iran and would not engage in offensive military action.
However, he said Britain would continue supporting the collective self-defence of its allies and personnel in the region.
The Royal Air Force base at Akrotiri, located near the southern Cypriot city of Limassol, remains operational as security assessments and investigations continue.
Authorities have not indicated whether further retaliatory or defensive measures will follow the drone strike.
