Iran ready to assist Nigeria in fight against terrorism – Envoy

Iran has expressed readiness to support Nigeria in tackling terrorism, according to Mahdavi Raja, the country’s ambassador to Nigeria.

Raja made the remark during an interview on Arise Television, where he said Tehran was willing to share its experience in counterterrorism with Nigeria.

His comments followed allegations by Michael Freeman that Iran was sponsoring Islamic movements in Nigeria and other parts of West Africa to spread terrorism.

Freeman made the claim amid protests by members of the islamic movement of Nigeria, also known as Shi’ites, over the reported killing of Ali Khamenei during recent strikes on Tehran by the United States and Israel.

He said, “we are ready to lend a helping hand. As an ambassador here, I tell Nigerian officials that we are ready to assist in combating terrorism.

“We know that Nigeria faces threats from Boko Haram, ISWAP, and others. We are ready to share our experience in counterterrorism, as we have extensive experience in the region.”

Responding to the allegation, Raja said Islamic groups in Nigeria only share spiritual and cultural connections with Iran, stressing that such relationships do not amount to political support.

He explained that recent rallies held by Shi’ite members in Nigeria were expressions of mourning and solidarity following the assassination of the Iranian leader.

According to the envoy, the gatherings reflected religious and emotional ties among Muslims rather than any political direction from Tehran.

Raja added that Iran has consistently condemned terrorism and remains open to cooperating with countries facing security threats.

He noted that Nigeria continues to battle insurgent groups such as Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province, adding that Iran is willing to share its counterterrorism experience.

The ambassador also said Iran considers itself a victim of terrorism and has repeatedly condemned attacks across Nigeria, Africa, and other parts of the world.
