IGP Tunji Disu inaugurates state police implementation committee

Tunji Disu, inspector-general of police, has inaugurated a seven-member committee to oversee the implementation of state police in Nigeria.

The committee, which will be chaired by Olu Ogunsakin, a professor of police studies, was inaugurated on Wednesday.

Speaking at the event, Disu, who was recently appointed as IGP, tasked the committee with proposing an operational framework for the establishment and coordination of state police structures nationwide.

He urged members to examine key issues relating to training, recruitment, resource allocation, and oversight mechanisms necessary for the effective functioning of state police formations.

The IGP stated that decentralising the police would enable state governments and local authorities to respond more effectively to security challenges within their respective jurisdictions.

On several occasions, Bola Tinubu has pledged that his administration would establish state police as part of broader efforts to tackle insecurity across the country.
