Ebonyi State Governor, Francis Nwifuru, has removed the Commissioner for Works, Engr. Stanley Lebechi Mbam, from office with immediate effect, about four months after he was recalled from an earlier indefinite suspension.
The governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Monday Uzor, announced the decision in a statement on Saturday, September 19, 2026, directing Mbam to immediately relinquish his responsibilities and return government property in his possession.
“The Governor of Ebonyi State, His Excellency Rt. Hon. Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru, FNIOB, FCAI, GGCEHF, has directed the immediate removal from office of the Honourable Commissioner for Works, Engr. Stanley Lebechi Mbam,” the statement said.
Nwifuru specifically directed the former commissioner to hand over all government property in his possession, including his official vehicle, to the Secretary to the State Government.
Mbam was also ordered to transfer the responsibilities of the Ministry of Works to its Permanent Secretary pending further directives from the state government.
The government did not disclose the reason for his removal, although the statement said the Nwifuru administration remained focused on “delivering effective governance and improving public infrastructure.”
The sack comes months after Mbam was suspended indefinitely on February 28, 2026, alongside the Commissioner for Infrastructure Development for Concession, Ogbonnaya Obasi-Abara. At the time, the suspension was linked to alleged dereliction of duty, concerns about the pace of infrastructure projects and lapses in the Ministry of Works.
Three days after the suspension, Mbam publicly apologised to the governor and sought another opportunity to serve, accepting responsibility for what he described as unmet expectations.
Nwifuru subsequently recalled Mbam and other suspended officials on May 3, 2026, after which he resumed his duties as Commissioner for Works. His return to office lasted about four months before Saturday’s removal.
The latest development is not Mbam’s first disciplinary action under the administration. Premium Times reports that he was also among government officials suspended in July 2025 for allegedly failing to attend an important government function before being recalled about a week later. His February 2026 suspension was therefore his second before the latest outright removal from office.
As of Saturday, the state government had not announced a replacement for Mbam or provided further details explaining the immediate termination of his appointment.
