The Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, has ordered security agencies to take action against a Hisbah group that set up an illegal government in Jos North Local Government Area.
The governor said the group’s actions are illegal, not approved, and not allowed in Plateau State.
Mutfwang warned everyone involved to stop these actions immediately or risk arrest and prosecution under Nigerian law.
The Governor stressed that Plateau State follows one constitution, one legal system, and one official authority, adding that no person or group can assume powers the law does not grant.
The governor’s directive follows an alleged Sharia enforcement on traders in Jos, both Christians and Muslims, ordering them to open their shops on Sundays or face punishment.
The directive says closing businesses on Sunday is haram and goes against Islamic teachings. The official also reportedly claims that Plateau State is a Sharia state and that everyone must follow Islamic laws.
Governor Mutfwang has told security agencies to step up intelligence gathering and other legal actions to find out who is involved and what they are doing. He also wants to make sure residents are safe from threats, harassment, extortion, or any other illegal pressure.
He made it clear that this order is not aimed at any religion, ethnic group, or community. Plateau State is home to people of many faiths, ethnicities, and backgrounds, and everyone deserves equal protection under the law.
