Gayle King has slammed Hayden Panettiere‘s estranged mom’s comments following her sudden death!
The “CBS Mornings” host did not hold back as she reacted to Lesley Vogel’s remarks about her daughter’s life as news of the actress’s passing made headlines. The mother-daughter duo had severed ties for nearly two decades over financial control, childhood pressure, and emotional disconnection.
Gayle King previously reflected on her final interaction with Hayden Panettiere just months before the heartbreaking news of her death.
During the August 19 broadcast of “CBS Mornings,” King and her colleagues aired their views on Vogel’s statement following her daughter’s death. The TV presenters, Kelly O’Grady and Vladimir Duthiers, discussed the recent heartbreaking news of Panettiere’s death amid reacting to recent remarks from her estranged mother.
Panettiere was declared dead at a residence in Greenville, South Carolina, after paramedics responded to a 911 call about an unresponsive female in cardiac arrest. She was 36 when she died on Sunday, August 16, a few days from her 37th birthday.
During the show, King read out Vogel’s comments to media outlets aloud before addressing them with her “CBS Mornings” colleagues. The host shared a portion where Vogel said her daughter “sadly lost her way” and that she wished she “stayed true to herself because she had many incredible attributes.”
As reported by PEOPLE, King said in response, “You know, guys, you read this, and all I can think is, ‘Thanks, Mom, for nothing.’”
What Did Lesley Vogel Say After Her Daughter’s Death?
4Duthiers chimed in, noting that Panettiere had been open about her failures and struggles, citing the actress’s last interview with King months before her death.
“She cannot respond now, and for her mother to use these days after Hayden’s death to just remind the world just how much trauma she caused, it’s unseemly,” the featured host remarked. He also added later on that Vogel’s expected maternal instinct would be to just mourn her daughter’s tragic passing.
The conversation continued with King acknowledging that the “Nashville” star had a “complicated relationship with her mom,” which was still a work in progress.
She then noted that Vogel had this chance to speak up after her daughter’s death but blew it. O’Grady joined in, saying, “We would all agree” if Vogel had “stopped at ‘she’s amazing, and she’s talented.’”
“Follow the lead of your partner, the father of her child,” King added, seemingly referring to the TV star’s father’s statement, where he announced her death, describing her as an incredible light that brought joy to many.
Hayden Panettiere’s Point Of View About Rift With Her Mother
4Before Panettiere’s death, she had revealed the painful moment when her relationship with her mom became permanently fractured. She shared that the dynamics of their relationship changed completely after she fired her mom as her manager at the age of 19.
The actress noted her struggles from being put into the entertainment industry as an infant and with her mother serving as her manager; the lines between mother and boss became increasingly blurred.
“Everything was business,” the actress recalled during an appearance on “On Purpose with Jay Shetty.” “I became the confidant and the assistant and the therapist and the shoulder to cry on and everything but her child.”
She gathered the courage, while working on the hit NBC show where she starred as Claire Bennett, to tell Vogel that she wanted to end their professional relationship. The late actress recalled that with a hopeful heart, she told Vogel, “I just want you to be my mom,” but her response was out of the books.
Panettiere claimed her mother responded with only three words, “You owe me,” and that it all went downhill from there.
Lesley Vogel And Her Daughter Were At Loggerheads For Other Reasons
4After Panettiere’s death, more details have come to light about her broken relationship with her mom, besides the incident when the “Heroes” alum severed professional ties. Vogel, in a recent interview, admitted that she did not support her daughter’s romantic relationship with on-and-off boyfriend Brian Hickerson.
She said that she tried so hard to keep the pair apart, insisting that Hickerson had no positive influence on her daughter’s life. Her attempts ended in futility as Hickerson was reportedly with the actress during her last moments on earth.
The mother-daughter duo also did not see eye to eye on the narrative Panettiere painted in her memoir, “This Is Me: A Reckoning.” While the actress highlighted that their personal relationship went south after years of working around eggshells around her mother, Vogel holds a different view.
According to The Blast, the 70-year-old claimed that their relationship took a turn after her daughter displayed some behavioral flaws such as entitlement, manipulation, gaslighting, and lack of compassion.

The anchor revealed that, during her off-camera conversation with Panettiere, “she was saying she felt that she was in a good place.” PEOPLE reports that the pair also talked about theactress’’ daughter, where she admitted that giving up custody was a very hard decision. Through their interaction, King said she could see that Panettiere was still struggling but trying to put on a brave face.
