From Zamfara governor to Geregu Power chair: Meet Abdul-Aziz Yari

Geregu Power Plc has announced the appointment of former Zamfara State governor, Abdul-Aziz Abubakar Yari, as the new chairman of its Board of Directors, effective 29 December 2025.

This appointment follows the recent development in Geregu Power, after MA’AM Energy Limited acquired a 95 percent equity interest in Amperion Power Distribution Company Limited, becoming the new controlling shareholder of Amperion Power Distribution Company Limited.

“Following the above change in the ultimate beneficial ownership of the Company’s issued share capital, the Board of Directors at its meeting held on Monday, 29th December, 2025 considered and approved the appointment of the following persons to the Board of the Company, with effect from Monday, 29th December, 2025,” said Geregu in a press brief filed on NGX.

Abdul-Aziz Abubakar Yari was born on September 28, 1968, in Talata Mafara, Zamfara State. He attended Talata Mafara Township Primary School and Government Teacher’s College in Bakura from 1979 to 1984.

Yari obtained his tertiary certificate at the Sokoto Polytechnic in 1994, where he also earned his diploma in Secretarial Studies in 2004. He also attended Kebbi Polytechnic, where he obtained a Graduate Diploma in Public Administration in 2008.

He has a Leadership and Change Certificate from London School of Economics (2023) and a Degree of Master of Science in Finance and Investment Management from University of Salford Manchester, United Kingdom (2025).

Yari began his political career 26 years ago, when he served as the Secretary of the now defunct All Nigeria’s People Party (ANPP) from 1999 t0 2003. Elected as Chairman of the ANPP Zamfara State in 2003, he became the National Financial Secretary of the Party from 2003 until 2007. Later that year (2007), he was elected as a member representing the Anka/Talata Mafara Constituency from 2007 until 2011.

He became Zamfara State governor on 26 April 2011, where he served as a two-term governor ending in 2019. During his turn as the governor of Zamfara State, he was unanimously elected as the chairman of the National Governors’ Forum, highlighting great trust and respect in Yari’s leadership ability. A high-ranking member of the 10th National Assembly, Yari was appointed the chairman of the Senate committee on water resources on 8 August 2023.

Other individuals Geregu appointed include Abdulkadeer Babaginda Njiddah as non-executive director, Usman Gur Mohammed as independent non-executive director, Mahmud Abubakar Magaji as independent non-executive director, Mohammed Sani Jaafaru as independent non-executive director, and Neka Uzoamaka Adogu as independent non-executive director.

“The Board is confident that the appointments will strengthen the governance structure and strategic direction of the Company,” Geregu said.
