Female Defendant Dies During NDLEA Trial at Benin Federal High Court

Proceedings at the Federal High Court, Benin City, were abruptly halted on Tuesday following the sudden collapse and death of Mrs. Titilayo Akindele, a 52‑year‑old defendant standing trial in a case brought by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

Mrs. Akindele, who had reportedly been in detention for about three months, appeared in court in a visibly frail condition. Despite her deteriorating health, she was re‑arraigned on March 31 after failing to produce a medical report during her initial arraignment the previous day.

Eyewitnesses recounted that she was unable to sit or stand unaided during proceedings. Moments after her case was called, she slumped in the courtroom, causing panic among lawyers, staff, and litigants. Efforts to revive her proved unsuccessful, compounded by the absence of immediate medical facilities within the court premises. She was later confirmed dead.

In response, the court adjourned all remaining matters for the day in honour of the deceased, while her body was transferred to a mortuary. The incident has raised serious concerns about detainee welfare, alleged negligence, and access to medical care within the justice system.

The Edo State Command of the NDLEA has yet to issue an official statement, though sources suggest an internal inquiry may be underway.
