Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) and human rights campaigner, Mr. Femi Falana, has called on the Nigerian media to intensify advocacy for the reopening of unresolved murder cases.
Speaking at a press conference organised by the Socio‑Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) in Ikeja, Falana stressed that journalists must use their platforms to demand justice for victims of extrajudicial killings and other rights violations. He warned that abandoning high‑profile cases without accountability undermines public trust in the justice system.
Falana cited unresolved cases such as the alleged murder of Master Sylvester Oromoni of Dowen College, the 2018 Offa bank robbery in Kwara, the killing of Kudurat Abiola, wife of Chief MKO Abiola, and the murder of six traders at Owode Onirin Market in Lagos. He insisted that the media must not allow these matters to fade into obscurity.
He further criticised the failure of media organisations to fully invoke the Freedom of Information Act in pursuit of accountability and transparency. Falana cautioned against sacrificing professionalism for commercial gains, particularly through practices like newspaper wraparound advertisements, which he said erode public confidence.
“The media must not sacrifice truth and objectivity on the altar of commercial gains,” Falana declared, emphasising that the press has a constitutional duty to hold government accountable and defend the rights of citizens.
