Nigerian businessman Obinwanne Okeke, popularly known as Invictus Obi, has reportedly returned to Nigeria’s social and elite circles following his release from a United States prison, with indications that he may be considering a future career in Nigerian politics.
Okeke, who was convicted in the United States over an international business email compromise and computer hacking scheme involving approximately $11 million, was recently spotted at the 40th birthday celebration of entrepreneur and real estate developer Francis Udochukwu Nwaogwugu, popularly known as Vintage.
Dressed in a black tuxedo, bow tie and fashionable transparent glasses, the former businessman made an appearance on the event’s black carpet, attracting attention following his return to Nigeria.
According to a report by Peoples Gazette, a close associate of Okeke disclosed that his political ambitions would soon be made public.
However, it remains unclear whether he intends to contest an elective position in his traditional South-East region or pursue a political appointment at the federal level.
FROM BUSINESS ICON TO US CONVICT
Okeke, once celebrated as one of Nigeria’s promising young entrepreneurs and featured in international business circles, suffered a major fall from grace following his arrest by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in August 2019.
He was arrested at Dulles International Airport in Virginia, United States, while preparing to travel to Nigeria.
The American authorities accused him of masterminding a sophisticated international cybercrime operation involving the theft of business email credentials and the diversion of millions of dollars belonging to unsuspecting victims.
Investigations revealed that the scheme, which reportedly operated between 2015 and 2019, targeted businesses through compromised email accounts and fraudulent payment instructions.
One of the major victims was Unatrac Holding Limited, an exporter of Caterpillar industrial machinery.
According to the US authorities, the operation resulted in losses estimated at approximately $11 million.
In 2021, Raj Parekh, then Acting United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, described the operation as a multi-year global business email and computer hacking scheme.
Okeke was subsequently sentenced in February 2021 to 10 years’ imprisonment after pleading guilty to conspiracy charges relating to wire fraud and computer fraud.
He was reportedly released in December 2025.
POLITICAL AMBITION AND CONSTITUTIONAL QUESTIONS
His reported interest in Nigerian politics could, however, raise questions about constitutional eligibility, particularly if he intends to seek an elective position.
Section 137(1)(e) of the 1999 Constitution, as amended, addresses disqualification from presidential elections in cases involving convictions and sentences for offences involving dishonesty or fraud.
Similarly, Section 182(1)(e) contains provisions relating to eligibility for governorship elections.
The relevant constitutional provisions generally impose a 10-year period before a person convicted and sentenced for an offence involving dishonesty or fraud can qualify for certain elective offices.
However, determining Okeke’s eligibility would require a careful examination of his conviction, sentence, release circumstances and the applicable constitutional provisions.
His reported 10-year sentence in the United States could therefore become a significant issue should he formally declare an intention to contest an election.
QUESTIONS AWAITING ANSWERS
While Okeke’s appearance at a high-profile birthday celebration signals his renewed presence in Nigeria’s social circles, his reported political ambition is already attracting attention.
Questions remain about the political platform he intends to pursue, the office he may seek and whether his reported ambition will survive constitutional scrutiny.
A lawyer and publicist representing Okeke reportedly did not immediately respond to requests for comments on his alleged political plans.
For now, neither a formal declaration nor an official confirmation of his political ambition has been made public.
