EPL: ‘Guardiola’s brain’ – Sunday Oliseh reacts as Arteta wins title with Arsenal

Former Super Eagles coach, Sunday Oliseh has commended Premier League-winning manager Mikel Arteta, characterizing the Spanish tactician as one who possesses ‘some of Pep Guardiola’s intellect’ along with a fighter’s mentality.

Arteta led Arsenal to the Premier League title after Manchester City was held to a 1-1 draw by AFC Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium on Tuesday evening.

The title victory signifies Arsenal’s first league championship in over 20 years and also marks Arteta’s first significant trophy in the past five years.

During an appearance on Global Football Insights With Oliseh, the retired Nigeria international praised Arteta’s tactical development, leadership approach, and his capability to transform Arsenal into a title-contending team.

The former Nigeria international said, “Mikel Arteta is the ruler of the new era. He serves as the connection. He possesses some of Pep’s intellect and the fighting spirit of a captain.

“Similar to Pep, Arteta initiated a cultural overhaul. He let go of Mesut Ozil, the club’s most gifted creator at that time. The decision was influenced by the contract situation, advancing age, and injury concerns.”

Oliseh also acknowledged Arteta’s focus on tactical discipline, collective pressing, and positional adaptability as key factors in Arsenal’s transformation.

He said, “Arteta’s focus on collective pressing and discipline has been crucial in reshaping the club’s culture.

“An examination of the hybrid numbers will clarify this further. Consider Declan Rice and Kai Havertz; Arteta does not seek specialists, but rather players who can provide heat maps and run.

“He wants players capable of winning a header in their own box and scoring a tap-in at the opposite end within ten seconds. He has initiated a revolution in set-pieces.

“Arteta engaged specialist coaches to transform corner kicks and free kicks into mathematical certainties. He approaches every dead ball scenario as if it were a scripted play in American football.

“During the 2023 campaign, his constant coaching caused the team to reach a breaking point. His intensity led the players to perform with fear rather than fluidity, which contributed to their title loss.

“Reflecting on the title contender transformation of 2024/2025, Arteta adjusted his high-pressing 4-3-3 formation into a more balanced system that effectively countered elite counterattacks.

“By merging Guardiola’s strategic positioning with his own combative intensity, he has positioned himself to contend for significant trophies and demonstrate that the disciple has developed his own major blueprint.”
