Police have arrested more than 50 persons in connection with last Saturday’s protest in Ekpoma, Esan West Local Government Area of Edo State.
The Edo State Police Command said the suspects were involved in looting and other violent activities that followed the protest.
Police spokesperson, Eno Ikoedem, disclosed that the arrests were made at different locations across Ekpoma after several shops were looted and the palace of the Onojie of Ekpoma was vandalised.
According to the police, the suspects were taken away in a Black Maria and moved to Edo State, where they are currently awaiting arraignment.
At the court premises, relatives of the arrested persons were seen waiting as legal proceedings were expected to commence.
As of press time, security operatives had cordoned off the courtroom and prevented journalists from gaining access.
