Don’t curse Nigeria – Tinubu tells Imams, Pastors
Nigeria’s President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has cautioned religious leaders against condemning and cursing the country during their sermons in Mosques and Churches.
Tinubu made the request during Ramadan Iftar with traditional rulers and religious leaders at the State House in Abuja on Thursday, March 28, 2024.
The president said if a leader is bad, the Imams, pastors and citizens should wait for 2027 general elections so they can vote out the person. He also charged religious leaders to be more constructive in their criticism of those in elective positions.
Tinubu said; “The love of the nation is in your hands. Pray for our country. Educate our children. The sermons we preach to the members of our churches and mosques are important.
Do not condemn your own nation. As a Yoruba man and as our fathers will say, ‘no matter how slippery the bottom of your child is, you must leave the beads there. Leave the beads there.
This is your country; do not condemn it in sermons, do not abuse the nation. Leadership is meant for changes. Yes, this leader is bad, fine. Wait until the next election to change him, but do not condemn your country. Do not curse Nigeria. This is a beautiful land.”

Popular skit-maker, Adebowale Adedayo, known professionally as Mr Macaroni, recently expressed deep worry over the Nigerian political space.
The award-winning skit maker averred that there might be a lingering curse on the political system in the country. He stated this while dismissing any ideas of venturing into politics in the future.
Mr Macaroni believes that the way politics is played in Nigeria, it tends to corrupt even the most diligent individuals once they become part of the system.
The 30-year-old comic act revealed that his activism roots back to his time in secondary school, where he developed a strong aversion to cheating and mistreatment of others.
He emphasised the importance of treating people with respect while noting that anyone who fails to treat people with respect will undoubtedly face his objections.
Mr Macaroni said; “I think in the Nigerian political system or space, at it were, there’s a curse roaming around there because we’ve seen great men, men of valour go into that space and become something we no longer recognise.
“I think it started from secondary school, naturally I don’t like being cheated and I don’t like people around me to be cheated, just treat people with respect. So the moment you do not, then you have a problem with me”.
