Desmond Elliott Reveals Role in Obasa Political Drama

Lawmaker and veteran actor Desmond Elliott has explained how he became involved in the short-lived impeachment attempt against the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, saying his action was based on a misunderstanding while he was out of the country.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily, Elliott said he was in South Africa for a wedding when the impeachment process began and was not fully aware of the developments unfolding in Lagos.

He explained that on his return, he saw colleagues signing the impeachment notice and assumed it had the backing of the presidency. “I saw my colleagues signing, and I signed too, thinking the order was from the presidency,” he said.

Elliott added that the situation escalated until the presidency intervened directly to restore calm in the Assembly. He said lawmakers were instructed to reverse the decision after the intervention.

Following the presidential directive, the impeachment move was rescinded and Mudashiru Obasa was reinstated as Speaker, bringing an end to the brief political crisis in the Lagos Assembly.
