Delta Lagos–Atlanta Passengers Stranded After Back-To-Back Disruptions — Airline Cites Mechanical, Crew And Operational Issues

Passengers travelling from Lagos to Atlanta on Delta Air Lines have faced days of uncertainty following repeated disruptions to the carrier’s Lagos–Atlanta service, with affected travellers reporting cancellations, additional accommodation costs and uncertainty over onward connections in the United States.

The affected service was initially scheduled to depart Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, for Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport on Sunday, August 23, 2026.

According to accounts from passengers and communications attributed to the airline, the August 23 service was disrupted after a mechanical issue was identified during pre-departure safety checks.

Passengers were subsequently informed that the flight would be rescheduled after the aircraft underwent the necessary maintenance.

What began as a technical delay, however, developed into an ordeal lasting several days for some travellers.

On August 25, passengers again faced another disruption, with a notification sent to affected travellers attributing the development to crew availability constraints.

“We are sorry. Your flight DL9895 from Lagos (LOS) – Atlanta (ATL) was cancelled due to an issue that limited crew availability,” the message stated.

Some affected passengers said they were forced to make fresh hotel arrangements at their own expense while awaiting further information on when they would be able to travel.

The disruption has been particularly significant because Atlanta is one of Delta’s major connecting hubs, meaning passengers travelling onward to other cities in the United States risk missing connecting flights and incurring additional accommodation and travel expenses.

Some passengers were reportedly still waiting at the Lagos airport terminal at the time of the report, while others had returned to hotels.

Passengers stranded overnight as a result of airline operational disruptions may, depending on the applicable circumstances and passenger-protection rules, be entitled to assistance including accommodation, meals and transfers.

They may also be entitled, subject to the applicable rules and conditions of carriage, to rerouting on the next available service or a refund.

Delta’s Station Manager for Nigeria, Salami Omeiza, apologised to affected passengers and said the airline was working to resolve the situation.

He said the airline’s teams were working urgently to assist affected passengers and re-accommodate them on available flights.

He said the airline’s teams were working urgently to assist affected passengers and re-accommodate them on available flights.

However, Delta’s account of the August 25 disruption differs from the cancellation notification reportedly received by passengers.

While the notification attributed the cancellation of flight DL9895 to crew availability constraints, Omeiza said the August 25 service eventually departed after a delay caused by maintenance work.

“Delta flight DL55 on August 23 was cancelled due to operational reasons, while the flight on August 25 departed behind schedule as technicians resolved a maintenance issue with the aircraft,” he said.

“Our teams are working urgently to assist affected customers and re-accommodate them on the next available flights.”

“We are providing affected customers with the necessary support and will share further updates as they become available.”
