The Senator representing Abia Central Senatorial District, Augustine Akobundu has called on members of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to remain steadfast amid the growing defections rocking the party.
Akobundu made the appeal in a statement issued in Abuja on Wednesday, May 6, 2026.
A chieftain of the ADC, the lawmaker encouraged party members to remain committed to their collective resolve to lead Nigeria out of its current woes.
While acknowledging that those who defected from the coalition party acted within their rights, he maintained that the cause to reverse Nigeria’s “current gory state of insecurity, poverty, hunger, and disease…requires perseverance and strategic collaboration,” and not “movements defined only by convenience.”
“Such a cause requires perseverance and strategic collaboration among patriots with the genuine interests of the common masses at heart. Such a cause can not be achieved by movements defined only by convenience,” Akobundu said.
He appreciated party members’ demonstration of strength despite the drawbacks faced by the coalition party.
The lawmaker further assured ADC members that sooner than expected, there would be clarity in the face of chaos, and conviction in the face of confusion.
“What has happened should not demoralise anyone, rather it should serve as a springboard for renewed motivation to ensure that the movement of a few from our great party does not dampen our collective resolve to lead Nigeria out of her current woes.
“Based on the foregoing and after wide consultations, I wish to state that I have chosen to remain in ADC and join other nationalists from across every section of the country to pursue our challenging but lofty dream of achieving the noble ideals of our great party for the Nigerian people. I therefore call on our members to remain steadfast,” he said.
