The Cross River State Police Command has said four suspects will be arraigned for alleged assault on a police officer at Watt Market in Calabar.
The suspects are Emem Asuquo, 40; Aniema Nelson, 40; Idara Bassey Sunday, 28; and Mercy Edet, 44.
The Command disclosed this on Thursday in an update on the incident at Watt Market, where it had earlier arrested and screened 60 suspects.
According to the statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Eitokpah Sunday Akata, the four suspects were identified in connection with the alleged serious assault after preliminary investigation and review of available evidence.
They are scheduled to be arraigned before a court on Thursday, September 18, 2026.
The Command said the arrests and screening were conducted to identify persons allegedly connected with the incident and to ensure that those against whom sufficient evidence exists are processed in accordance with the law.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Ajo Geoffrey Ordue, assured the public that the Command will uphold the rule of law, protect the rights of all persons and subject allegations of assault against police personnel or any other person to due process.
He urged members of the public to remain calm and allow the judicial process to take its course, noting that the suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty by a court of competent jurisdiction.
