Court dissolves marriage after wife complains of financial hardship

An area court sitting at Centre-Igboro in Ilorin, Kwara State, has dissolved the marriage between Toyin Ajibola and Bashirat Mohammed, following complaints of financial hardship.

Hammad Ajumonbi, the presiding judge, delivered the ruling after a petition by Bashirat, who told the court that a persistent lack of funds and what she described as her husband’s irresponsibility had made the marriage unbearable.

“I want the court to grant me a divorce so that I can have rest of mind,” Bashirat told the court.

Ajibola, the husband, informed the court that he wished to continue with the marriage despite admitting to financial difficulties.

The judge ruled that although the husband expressed interest in sustaining the union, no woman should be compelled to remain in a marriage she no longer desired.

According to him, Bashirat needed to move forward to avoid being stranded and consequently ordered the dissolution of the marriage.

Ajumonbi granted custody of the couple’s three children to the mother while directing Ajibola to remain responsible for their feeding.

“He should have unrestricted access to the children and the mother should always make the children available any time their father requested,” the judge said.

The court further ordered Bashirat to observe a three-month iddah waiting period before contracting another marriage.
