Controversy Trails Fani‑Kayode’s Nomination as Germany Reportedly Rejects Ambassadorial Posting

Reports have emerged alleging that the German government has declined the proposed appointment of former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani‑Kayode, as Nigeria’s ambassador to Germany. According to Peoples Gazette, the rejection was communicated on March 13, with concerns raised over what was described as “erratic behaviour” and past divisive, ethnocentric, and religiously charged remarks attributed to him. The report also linked the decision to a recent incident in which he allegedly insulted the UK High Commissioner during a Ramadan dinner.

Fani‑Kayode, who was among over 60 ambassadorial nominees approved earlier in March by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has dismissed the report as “fake news.” He insisted that opposition elements are attempting to discredit his appointment, declaring: “Whether they like it or not, I will serve my country! Keep crying!”

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, through its spokesperson Kimibie Ebienfa, clarified that the Federal Government has already secured agréments for ambassador‑designates from ten countries, including the United Kingdom, France, United States of America, Ireland, Qatar, Republic of Benin, Ethiopia, Djibouti, Senegal, and Sierra Leone. Ebienfa noted that responses from other countries are still being awaited, and the date for the induction ceremony will be announced once finalized by the Presidency.
