The Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sunday Aneke, has reaffirmed the Nigerian Air Force’s (NAF) commitment to providing timely and accurate information to the media in the interest of transparency and national security.

Aneke gave the assurance at a cocktail meet-and-greet with defence correspondents in Abuja.

He said effective communication was central to strengthening civil–military relations and promoting public understanding of air operations.

“We are committed to providing timely and accurate information. However, certain operational details must be carefully verified to ensure they do not compromise ongoing operations, assets or personnel,” he said.

The CAS described defence correspondents as strategic partners in Nigeria’s national security architecture, noting that their reporting contributed significantly to the non-kinetic dimension of modern warfare.

According to him, responsible and developmental journalism plays a critical role in winning hearts and minds, shaping public perception and complementing kinetic efforts in addressing asymmetric security threats.

Aneke said the engagement was organised to deepen trust, encourage open dialogue and strengthen collaboration between the NAF and defence correspondents beyond routine briefings.

He commended journalists for their professionalism and support, adding that their work helped Nigerians better understand the sacrifices, challenges and achievements of NAF personnel.

The CAS appealed for patience and understanding in the handling of sensitive information, stressing the need to balance transparency with operational security.

He reiterated the NAF’s commitment to sustained engagement with the media, anchored on mutual respect, accuracy and the shared goal of building a secure and prosperous Nigeria.

In his remarks, the Director of Public Relations and Information, NAF, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, said defence correspondents occupied a unique and strategic position within the national security architecture.

Ejodame said through accurate reporting, analysis and storytelling, the media helped to win hearts and minds, build public trust and complement kinetic operations in the complex environment of asymmetric warfare.

He said the air force recognised the media as trusted partners in communicating the realities, responsibilities and sacrifices associated with military operations and national defence.

According to him, responsible journalism not only informed the public but also enhanced national cohesion by helping Nigerians better understand the efforts and challenges of personnel serving in uniform.

Ejodame expressed appreciation for the support and cooperation extended to his office since he assumed duty, assuring journalists of continued accessibility and openness.

He also appealed for patience in the handling of sensitive information to safeguard ongoing operations, assets and personnel. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)
