The curtain has finally fallen on Lionel Messi’s extraordinary international career.
After more than two decades of carrying Argentina’s hopes, enduring painful defeats and eventually reaching the summit of world football, Messi has confirmed that his journey with the national team is over.
The 39-year-old announced his retirement from international football on Monday, bringing an emotional end to a chapter that began with his Argentina debut in 2005.
Messi leaves the national team as its most-capped player, with 207 appearances, and its leading goalscorer with 125 goals.
For a player who spent years being judged by what he had not won with Argentina, the final years of Messi’s international career delivered almost everything.
He lifted the Copa América twice and, most importantly, finally achieved the dream that had eluded him for so long when Argentina won the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
But his final World Cup ended differently.
Argentina reached the 2026 final but lost 1-0 to Spain, leaving Messi to walk away from the international stage without the fairytale ending many had imagined for him.
In announcing his decision, Messi admitted that retirement was painful but said he had reached a point where he understood it was time to let go.
“It was a decision that hurt – and still hurts deep down – but I understand that the time has come,” he said.
He reflected on the years spent wearing Argentina’s famous blue and white shirt, insisting that he had always given everything he had for his country.
Messi said his motivation had never been limited to personal glory. He wanted to give Argentines moments they could celebrate and reasons to feel proud of their national team.
“Time is fleeting, chapters come to an end, and this is one that deeply affects me,” he said.
The decision also comes at a particularly emotional moment in Messi’s life.
His father, Jorge Messi, died earlier this month, and the footballer had previously admitted that the loss made him question how much longer he wanted to continue playing for Argentina.
He revealed that he had already been considering retirement following the World Cup final and became even more convinced after his father’s death.
The physical demands of international football also appear to have played a role.
Reflecting on Argentina’s defeat to Spain, Messi acknowledged that his body was beginning to tell him something his mind had been reluctant to accept.
“My legs could no longer continue,” he said, explaining that he had attempted to push himself beyond his physical limits but could not.
Yet Messi did not frame his departure simply as an admission of decline.
Instead, he pointed towards the generation waiting behind him.
According to the Argentine icon, several young players are emerging who deserve the opportunity to take centre stage for the national team.

“I’ve given everything I had; I have nothing left to offer, and moreover, there are some exceptional young players emerging who deserve this opportunity,” he said.
It is a strikingly different ending to the international career that once appeared destined to be defined by disappointment.
Messi endured defeats in major finals, criticism from supporters and even announced his retirement from international football in 2016 before reversing that decision.
Then came the transformation.
Argentina won the 2021 Copa América, followed by the 2022 Finalissima and the World Cup in Qatar. Messi went from being the superstar who could not win the biggest prize with his country to the captain who finally delivered it.
Now, after 207 appearances and 125 goals, the chapter is closed.
Messi’s international career may be over, but his football career is not.
The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner remains a player for Inter Miami, where he is contracted until 2028.
For Argentina, however, the No. 10 shirt will soon belong to someone else.
And for millions of supporters who watched Messi grow from a gifted teenager into one of football’s defining figures, his departure marks the end of an era that may never be repeated.
