Aminu Abdussalam-Gwarzo, deputy governor of Kano state has resigned from office.
Ibrahim Shuaibu, spokesperson to the deputy governor confirmed the development on Friday.
The resignation also comes against the backdrop of recent political realignments in Kano following Governor Abba Yusuf’s defection to the All Progressives Congress, a development that has triggered significant shifts within the state’s political and administrative structures.
The Kano State House of Assembly had, in recent days, levelled a series of allegations against Gwarzo, including claims of misconduct and issues bordering on the discharge of his official responsibilities.
The lawmakers had also initiated moves that observers described as a prelude to possible disciplinary action, raising concerns about a looming political crisis within the state executive arm.
Abdussalam had earlier sought to halt the process through a federal high court sitting in Kano, but his application was rejected on Wednesday.
The Kwankwasiyya Movement also confirmed on Friday in a statement issued by Habibu Sale Mohammed, its spokesperson.
The resignation comes amid ongoing impeachment proceedings initiated by the Kano state house of assembly.
“The Kwankwasiyya Movement wishes to formally inform the general public, the good people of Kano State, and the entire nation that the deputy governor of Kano State has tendered his resignation from office,” the statement said.
The movement described the decision as difficult but necessary “in the overall interest of the people and the stability of governance in the state.”
It cited constraints that had hindered “the full realization of the benefits and responsibilities attached to the office of the Deputy Governor.”
