Academic activities are set to resume at Plateau State University (PLASU) after the institution’s chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) suspended its strike following an agreement with the Plateau State Government.
The union reached the decision at an emergency congress held in Jos on Tuesday, where members reviewed the issues that had triggered the industrial action on August 26, 2026.
Following deliberations on the outcome of negotiations with the state government, the congress approved the suspension of the strike with effect from 12:00 midnight on September 16, 2026.
The decision was contained in a statement jointly signed by the PLASU ASUU branch chairperson, Dr Vincent D. Choji, and secretary, Dr Lomka Iliya Kopdiya.
According to the union, the decision followed an agreement reached between representatives of ASUU and the Plateau State Government during negotiations.
The government negotiating team was led by the Head of Service, Mr Steven Pam Gadong, while ASUU’s delegation was headed by its zonal coordinator, Professor Aku Timothy Namo.
Among the issues addressed was the commencement of the Contributory Pension Scheme for affected university staff.
The agreement also provides for the full implementation of the 2025 FGN/ASUU agreement, including the payment of outstanding arrears dating back to January 2026.
Other areas covered by the agreement include the provision of safe and secure staff quarters and the construction of trenches around the university’s perimeter fence.
The union said the agreement also addressed its concerns over the alleged intimidation of union leaders.
ASUU had previously raised the issue in a letter forwarded to Congress through the university registrar on May 18, 2026.
The Plateau Government, according to the agreement, committed to stopping such alleged intimidation.

Another major component of the negotiations was the payment of 22 months’ arrears of the 25 per cent and 35 per cent wage award owed to the university’s academic staff.
ASUU orders immediate return to work
After reviewing the terms reached by both negotiating teams, the union’s congress resolved to suspend the industrial action.
“Having reviewed the agreement, Congress resolved that the strike be suspended with effect from 12:00 midnight, 16th September, 2026,” the statement said.
With the suspension now in effect, the PLASU ASUU branch directed its members to return to their duties and resume all academic activities.
