ASUU Gives FG 14 Days to Meet Demands, Threatens Fresh Strike

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has given the Federal Government of Nigeria 14 days to address long-standing issues affecting the university system or face the prospect of industrial action.

The decision followed a National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held on Sunday, September 28, 2025, at the University of Abuja.

In a statement personally signed by its national president, Prof. Chris Piwuna, the union accused the government of neglecting public universities and refusing to implement key agreements.

ASUU said that if the ultimatum lapses without meaningful engagement, it will embark on a two-week warning strike before proceeding to a total and indefinite strike.

The Federal Government, through the Ministry of Education, had earlier constituted a committee chaired by the permanent secretary, Abel Enitan, to review ASUU’s proposals. However, no resolution has been made public at the time of this report.

ASUU’s core demands include the renegotiation of the 2009 agreement, provision of revitalisation funds for universities, settlement of outstanding salary arrears, and the establishment of a sustainable funding framework for the tertiary education system.

The union warned that continued inaction could further destabilise Nigeria’s university calendar, which has suffered repeated disruptions over the past decade due to recurring strikes.
