The Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has said the Nigerian Army is strengthening its intelligence-driven and technology-enabled operations against terrorism, banditry, and other asymmetric threats.
Shaibu made this known while addressing participants of the National Defence College, Course 34, in Abuja.
He said modern conflicts are increasingly driven by non-state actors who exploit societal and governance gaps.
“Asymmetric threats thrive on adaptability, anonymity, and attacks on civilians. Our response must be proactive and intelligence-led,” Shaibu said.
According to him, the Army has recalibrated its operational doctrine through a multi-domain strategy that integrates military action with intelligence and inter-agency cooperation.
He noted that operations across the country are tailored to regional threats.
“In the North-East, our troops continue to degrade terrorist capabilities, while in the North-West, joint operations are disrupting bandit networks,” he said.
Shaibu added that stabilisation operations in the North-Central region are focused on protecting civilians.
The COAS stressed the importance of technology, training, and jointness in improving operational effectiveness.
“National security now goes beyond territorial defence to include economic and cyber security,” he stated.
He emphasised that military efforts must be supported by good governance.
“Enduring peace can only be achieved through effective governance and inclusive development,” he said.
Shaibu urged future military and strategic leaders to embrace integrated security frameworks.
He reassured Nigerians of the Army’s commitment to safeguarding lives and critical infrastructure.
