The 82 Division of the Nigerian Army on Thursday dismissed a viral online “sit-at-home” threat, describing it as a baseless, criminal ploy to instil fear and disrupt normal activities across the South East.
The Army said the message, circulated by faceless elements, was crafted to undermine government authority and reverse the security gains recorded in the region, particularly the dismantling of unlawful lockdowns previously enforced by proscribed groups.
According to a statement by the Acting Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, 82 Division, Nigerian Army, Lt. Col. Olabisi Olalekan Ayeni, the Nigerian Army, working with the Police and other security agencies, has activated a comprehensive security plan to ensure that residents move freely and businesses operate without hindrance.
“No illegal order will stop law-abiding citizens from going about their daily activities, assuring that troops have been deployed to protect lives, property, and critical infrastructure across the region,”the Division said.
Residents were urged to disregard the threat and resist attempts by criminal groups to sow panic. The Army advised the public to remain calm and report suspicious movements or activities.
The statement warned that anyone attempting to enforce any illegal order would be decisively dealt with in line with the law.
