Actor Bob Manuel shares how he protects himself after heavy roles

Legendary Nollywood icon Bob Manuel Udokwu has opened up about how he has protected his mental health over the years after taking on heavy roles.

The actor was honoured with the coveted Golden Legacy Award at the Nollywood Film Festival Germany and NEGA Gala Night, where he shared that he always goes back to his comfort books after a heavy role to feel like himself again.

When asked how he copes, he disclosed that he protects his mental well-being by psychologically reading books he loves

In his words:  ‘After immersing myself in such characters, I release myself psychologically by reading books I love and reminding myself that it’s merely a role , another person’s soul, which has nothing to do with my personality. That way, I protect myself from the emotional burden.”

When asked, “Directing versus acting: which one does he love more, and why?”

He responded, “Having studied theatre arts, you are taught directing, script writing, acting, production management, choreography and all aspects of theatre. Since I’m one of the pioneers, acting was a quicker way for the audience to know who you are. Many of us opted for acting in the early stages of the industry. I wouldn’t say I love one more than the other, but acting gives you visibility. Most people don’t know directors, but actors are easily noticed. So acting, being in front of the camera, is more acceptable to me.”
