Mobile Money Vendors To Embark On Nationwide Strike Over E-Levy

The Mobile Money Agents’ Association of Ghana has revealed its intentions to embark on a nationwide strike on Thursday 23rd December 2021 over e-levy. According to the union, the controversial 1.75 E-levy documented in the 2022 “Agyenkwa” budget is adverse to their business.

The General Secretary of the Union, Evans Otumfour intimated in a statement released by the union that mobile money agents will not be available across the country on the day they embark on their nationwide strike in a bid to send a message to the government of Ghana.

“We see this levy as very regressive and critical to the survival of our businesses. Consequently, as part of our demonstration on Thursday, December 23, 2021, our services as mobile money agents will not be accessible across the country”, he said.

As a reminder, Finance Minister Ken Offori Atta suggested the contentious E-levy in the 2022 budget. The proposed fee would impose a 1.75 percent penalty on all digital money transactions worth more than 100 cedis. Despite the government’s efforts to make a case for obtaining needed funds, several stakeholders have opposed the levy, describing it as a stifling of a growing business.

While Minority has proposed lowering the charge to 1% and raising the transaction threshold to 300 cedis, the government has yet to release a decision in this regard. According to the Ghana Money Agents’ Association, if all efforts fail, indefinite action will be taken.
