Polygamy is strictly for the rich – Phyna (Video)

Controversial Big Brother Naija season 7 winner, Josephina Otabor, professionally known as Phyna, has asserted that polygamy is strictly for wealthy men.

She made the remark on her podcast while using, actor Yul Edochie as well as billionaire politician, Ned Nwoko as case studies.

Phyna argued that Yul couldn’t manage polygamy because he is not “very rich” whereas Ned is doing very well with his six wives because of his wealth.

She said: “If Yul Edochie was very rich, he would have been able to manage both May and Judy quietly. Nobody needs to disturb anybody.

“Did you see Ned [Nwoko]? No stress. Soft life. Peace of mind. That’s what we call polygamy. That’s why I said it [polygamy] is strictly for the rich. I’m not saying Yul is not rich. He is rich but aargh.”

Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi’s elder sister, Princess Folashade Ogunwusi-Fadairo earlier said that the monarch has never been a believer in polygamy.

Princess Folashade explained during an interview that circumstances forced her brother to take more wives. Oba Adeyeye is married to six women, five of which he tied the knot with in 2022.

Speaking on his decision to bend to the will of tradition, she said it is not her place to meddle but she knows it must have been tough for the royal leader to embrace polygamy against his personal conviction.

Ooni’s sister said; “My opinion is that what you have to do, you just have to do it. Meanwhile, that’s his personal life, I can’t meddle in it. What I can say is that I don’t know if you were there during his wedding anniversary or so, if you heard the speech he made, it was very touching and it was something that personally he didn’t like but he had no choice, he had to do it.

Where the Yoruba are coming from, polygamy is expected. And being the progenitor of the Yoruba race, inu e ni won bi wa si (we were born in it). For instance, my grandfather had eight wives, that’s paternal and my maternal grandfather had about seven or eight wives too. So, it’s something he had to do, although, I think he avoided it.”
