Tinubu: Now Is Not The Time For Such A Salary Increase; The Average Nigerian Is Struggling – Obi

Following recent reports on various platforms that the federal government plans to increase the salaries of the president, vice president, judiciary, and others by 114 percent, the Labor Party (LP) ran for president in the recently concluded presidential election. Mr. Peter Obi blamed the recently proposed 114 percent salary increase for elected officials and public servants by the Revenue Mobilization, Allocation, and Budget Commission (RMAFC).

He also criticized politicians, including President Bola Tinubu and his Vice president, for allowing this to happen.

In a series of tweets on Thursday, Obi expressed his disappointment over the increase in the salaries of political officials.

He described the current salary increase as in bad taste, considering the current economic situation and the difficulties faced by citizens.

He warned that leaders should focus on reducing administrative costs and alleting the suffering of citizens. His words: “It is with great reservations that I learned that the Revenue Mobilization and Budget Commission has approved a 114 percent salary increase for elected politicians, including the President, Vice President, Governors, Legislators, and Judicial and Civil Service Officers (RMAFC).

“Now is not the right time for such a salary increase, if it is needed. We live in a time when the average Nigerian is struggling with harsh economic realities, and over 130 million Nigerians currently live in poverty. This comes at a time when the government’s recent reform measures have raised the cost of living astronomically. One would expect leaders and officials to focus on reducing administrative costs and alleting the suffering of Nigerians. This moment calls for creative ways to lift the majority out of poverty.

“Lawyers should therefore prioritize what affects the masses and the lower strata of society. The immortal words of Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar: ‘That which concerns ourselves is served last.’” Therefore, leaders should prioritize what affects the masses and the lower strata of society.
