According to Kassim Afegbua, a political commentator and member of the All Progressive Congress (APC), the problem with the southeast region of Nigeria is that they are solely focused on seeking the presidency of the country. Afegbua made this statement during an interview on the Arise program, Prime Time, when he was asked about the leadership tussle within the APC regarding the position of Senate President.

Afegbua previously stated on the program that the party had held a meeting and decided that Godswill Akpabio should be their choice for the Senate President. He compared this to the party’s position in 2019 when Adams Oshiomhole was the national chairman, and they insisted on Ahmed Lawan becoming the Senate President.

In his statement, Afegbua highlighted that the southeast region had held prominent positions in the national assembly, with individuals from the region serving as Senate President for a total of 8 years and as Deputy Senate President for 12 years during the 24 years of democracy in Nigeria. He argued that the problem lies in their strong desire for the presidency of the country rather than focusing on attaining the position of Senate President.

Kassim Afegbua believes that the southeast region’s focus on seeking the presidency of Nigeria has hindered their ability to prioritize the position of Senate President. He pointed out their historical presence in the national assembly’s leadership roles and suggested that redirecting their aspirations towards the Senate Presidency could be more fruitful for the region.
