The Labour Party’s (LP) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has stated that the President Bola Tinubu-led Nigerian government must not allow the country to descend into chaos as a result of the country’s continuing horrific wave of deaths and criminality.

Obi issued the warning on Monday night on his Twitter handle, lamenting the recent spate of terrorist attacks and fatalities in Plateau, Sokoto, Zamfara, and Benue states, which he described as dismal and exceedingly concerning.

According to the former governor of Anambra State, who is now disputing President Tinubu’s victory in the February 25 presidential election at the Presidential Victory Petition Tribunal, 226 Nigerians have been killed recently in Plateau, Sokoto, Zamfara, and Benue states.

“The continued horrific spate of all forms of criminality, especially visceral bloodletting and killings, as witnessed recently in Plateau, where over 120 people were killed, 50 killed in Sokoto, 31 killed in Zamfara, and 25 killed in Benue, are very depressing and extremely worrisome,” Obi added.

“These deaths are not just numbers; they are wastage of sacred human lives—people who lived among us as family members, relatives, and friends.” While I applaud the efforts of governments at all levels and security services, I sincerely request that they do more to stop this situation from worsening. Governments and security services must not allow the country to continue on its path to anarchy. I deeply sympathise with the impacted families. “May God grant the dead eternal rest.”
