“35% Women’s Representation In Governance” — FG Prepares Executive Bill For National Assembly, First Lady Backs Initiative

The Federal Government has announced plans to present an Executive Bill to the National Assembly seeking 35 per cent representation for women in governance.

The Minister of Women Affairs, Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, disclosed this in Lafia, the Nasarawa State capital, during a pre-rally empowerment programme spearheaded by the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu.

The minister said the bill was being drafted for onward presentation to the National Assembly.

She added that the First Lady was committed to ensuring that the bill passed through the necessary legislative processes and became law.

During the empowerment programme, refrigerators, sewing machines, grinding machines and cash were distributed to thousands of women across the state.

Sulaiman-Ibrahim also disclosed that the First Lady had introduced a menstrual hygiene initiative under which sanitary pads, condoms and other hygiene-related items would be distributed free of charge to women across the country.

The minister explained that the delegation visited Nasarawa State on the explicit directive of Mrs Tinubu to mobilise grassroots women and reaffirm the Federal Government’s commitment to their welfare.

Speaking on behalf of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) mobilisation wing, the party’s National Women Leader and Director of the APC Women Presidential Campaign Council, Dr Mary Alile Idele, said the delegation’s mission was to ensure the continuity of the Renewed Hope Agenda.

As part of the programme, the delegation visited markets and hospitals, where financial grants, business equipment and healthcare support were provided to thousands of women.

The empowerment initiative targeted beneficiaries in maternity wards, local markets and small business centres as part of the party’s mobilisation efforts ahead of the 2027 general election.

During the market outreach, selected traders received specialised business kiosks, while between 100 and 200 women received ₦100,000 each as additional capital to support their businesses.

The programme formed part of efforts to strengthen women’s economic participation, support small businesses and promote greater female involvement in governance.
