The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Kaduna State Sector Command, in collaboration with the State Judiciary, has launched a special intervention operation to tackle overloading and reduce fatal road crashes on the Kaduna–Abuja Highway.
Sector Commander Corps Commander Andrew Longkam disclosed on Thursday in Kaduna that the operation was prompted by the persistently high rate of overloading on the route, a major contributor to deadly accidents.
“We have organised a joint intervention operation between the FRSC Kaduna Sector Command and the Kaduna State Judiciary to address the rampant overloading along the Zuba–Kaduna road, which has led to high fatalities,” Longkam stated.
He noted that commercial vehicles frequently exceed their passenger capacity, significantly raising both the risk and severity of collisions.
“It is common to see vehicles designed for four passengers carrying up to nine, while those meant for seven transport as many as 15. In the event of a crash, the mortality rate becomes very high,” he added.
Longkam explained that the operation targets critical traffic violations responsible for most fatal accidents, with enforcement set to continue.
“This is a routine intervention focusing on offences that often lead to high fatalities on our roads. We will sustain this exercise,” he assured.
The FRSC will complement enforcement with public awareness campaigns in motor parks, mosques, and churches to promote road safety.
To date, 18 offenders have been apprehended during the operation.
“Of the 18, ten were booked for overloading, our primary focus. Others faced charges for tyre violations and number plate infractions,” Longkam said.
He urged motorists to strictly adhere to traffic regulations, stressing that crashes are caused by violations.
“Drivers must avoid overloading, speeding, and drunk driving, ensure their vehicles are roadworthy, and plan their journeys properly,” he advised.
Longkam expressed confidence that sustained enforcement and public sensitisation would significantly reduce road crashes, fatalities, and injuries on the nation’s highways.
