The Yobe State Independent Electoral Commission (YBSIEC) has fixed Saturday, June 6, 2026, for the conduct of local government elections across the state’s 17 councils. The announcement was made on Wednesday in Damaturu by Permanent Member I of the commission, Mohammed Nguru, during a stakeholders’ meeting involving security agencies, political party leaders and the media.

Nguru said the timetable had received the approval of Governor Mai Mala Buni and was aimed at strengthening grassroots democracy. He disclosed that YBSIEC would soon issue detailed election guidelines outlining procedures and timelines, urging political parties to comply fully. He added that chairmanship candidates must be at least 30 years old, councillorship aspirants 25, and all contestants must possess a minimum of a school certificate, be bona fide residents, and undergo mandatory security screening.

The commission also announced nomination fees of ₦300,000 for chairmanship, ₦250,000 for vice-chairmanship and ₦200,000 for councillorship positions. Nguru assured residents that the commission would independently organise and supervise the polls, promising a free, fair, credible and peaceful election, while calling on stakeholders to cooperate and eligible citizens to participate actively.
