Wike’s Bloc Picks Anyanwu And Mohammed As Consensus Candidates For Nat’l Sec And Nat’l Chair– Report

According to a report by Punch on Wednesday, March 25, 2026, the crisis within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has deepened as a faction backed by Nyesom Wike selected Samuel Anyanwu and Abdulrahman Mohammed as consensus candidates for National Secretary and National Chairman ahead of the party’s upcoming convention.

The decision has widened divisions in the opposition party, with governors aligned to another faction rejecting the process. This group, supported by Seyi Makinde and Bala Mohammed, has insisted on seeking legal solutions and reviewing the selection process.

The disagreement follows months of internal conflict that split the PDP into two camps. One faction held a convention in Ibadan in November, producing a leadership team led by Tanimu Turaki. However, a court later nullified that convention, ruling that it violated electoral and party laws.

In response, the Wike-aligned group formed a caretaker committee, which later moved to organise another convention. According to insiders, party leaders across different regions agreed on consensus candidates to avoid further disputes and reduce tensions.

Despite earlier attempts at reconciliation, talks between both sides have reportedly broken down. The governors’ camp believes the planned convention is flawed and is determined to challenge it legally.

Meanwhile, zoning arrangements for party positions have already been outlined across regions, with broad agreement among Wike’s supporters. The North-Central region is expected to produce the national chairman, while the South-East retains the secretary position.

With the PDP’s national convention approaching, the ongoing dispute raises concerns about unity within the party and its readiness for future elections.
