Wike Reignites Rift With Rivers Governor Fubara

Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike has declared that no one will stop him from working against the re-election bid of Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara ahead of the 2027 polls.

Wike made the statement on Sunday during a visit to Ahoada West Local Government Area of Rivers State, accusing Fubara of reneging on agreements on two separate occasions. He said the political miscalculations of 2023 would not be repeated.

The former Rivers governor dismissed claims that he could be summoned or instructed by any individual on matters relating to the state, insisting that Rivers politics does not operate on directives.

“I heard people saying they will call me and give me instructions. Let me tell you, nobody will call me,” Wike said. “There was a first agreement and it was breached. A second agreement was also breached. Which one do you want us to accept again?”

Wike stressed that his stance was not driven by personal ambition, noting that he remains comfortable in his current role as FCT minister. According to him, the issue concerns the political direction and dignity of Rivers State.

He also reflected on his tenure as governor, claiming the state commanded national respect and successfully confronted the federal government on key issues.

“When I was governor, Rivers State was in charge. We challenged the Federal Government and we won,” he said, adding that political actors who were previously silent are now vocal only because opposition forces have weakened.

Wike and Fubara have recently resumed their political face-off as the incumbent governor positions himself for a second term in 2027.
