Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has declared that loyalists have regained control of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), describing the party’s 10th Elective National Convention in Abuja as a turning point after months of internal crisis. He said the convention, monitored by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), marked the rebirth of a united opposition platform ahead of the 2027 elections.
Wike criticised defecting governors and political figures, saying true leaders should remain and resolve crises rather than abandon their parties. He also took a swipe at a former Labour Party presidential candidate, accusing him of failing to provide leadership during internal challenges.
Declaring victory over the party’s internal struggles, Wike said the PDP had been “reclaimed and returned to its rightful owners,” while urging aggrieved members who left the party to return and join efforts to rebuild it, assuring them they would not be excluded.
Earlier, Acting National Chairman Abdulrahman Mohammed warned members against placing personal ambition above party unity, stressing that no political office was worth weakening the PDP’s structure at a critical time.
Also speaking, former governors Okezie Ikpeazu and Sule Lamido called for reconciliation and reflection on the party’s historic role in national development, urging members to close ranks as the PDP prepares to reposition itself ahead of the 2027 general elections.
