Wike Is Anti-democratic; You Can Only Admonish Him, You Can’t Arrest Him On That Account — Sobowale

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has continued to draw reactions over his comments on the forthcoming FCT Area Council elections, particularly his insistence that he would only support candidates aligned with President Bola Tinubu. The remarks have generated debate about the boundaries of political speech and the powers vested in the FCT minister under Nigeria’s constitutional framework.

Speaking during an interview on Arise TV, Arise News analyst Dayo Sobowale weighed in on the matter, offering a legal and democratic interpretation of the controversy. According to Sobowale, “Wike is anti-democratic; you can only admonish him, you can’t arrest him on that account.”

He explained that while the minister’s comments may appear undemocratic and reflective of executive overreach, they do not amount to a criminal offence under the law. Sobowale noted that Wike, as an appointee of the president, exercises powers derived from constitutional provisions that date back to the military era, giving the office a structure different from that of an elected governor.

The analyst emphasized that political rhetoric, even when considered reckless or inappropriate, remains protected under the principle of free speech. He argued that disagreement with such statements should be addressed through democratic means rather than through arrest or prosecution.

Sobowale further stated that the real remedy lies in constitutional reform to redefine and possibly rebalance the powers of the FCT administration. Until such structural changes are made, he maintained, public criticism and political engagement remain the only lawful responses to statements perceived as anti-democratic.See_More…
