Why our grandmothers, mothers caught their husbands cheating but still stayed in the marriage – lady

A woman has ignited debate online after sharing her perspective on why grandmothers and mothers often stayed in marriages despite discovering their partners’ infidelity.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), she suggested that children, unemployment, and limited awareness of legal rights were the main reasons older women remained in such marriages.

She wrote: “The reason our grandmothers and mothers caught their partners cheating but still stayed in the marriage was because they had kids, were unemployed, and knew very little about their rights. I love women of this generation ,we will walk away and take all your wealth with us.”

Public Reactions

Her post quickly drew mixed reactions from social media users.

Some disagreed with her generalisation. Mansaah_Musa commented: “Women will walk away from cheating husbands and then end up as side chick to a married man. Make it make sense please.”

Ebicity added: “Poor family!! My grandmum was a serious biz woman she was self employed. she travelled Kano, plateau and the wide north, but she still met up, you dey talk like say one man fit feed 2 to 4 wives and 15 etc children??? They all contributed. Stop with those nollywood videoalities.”

KK argued: “Your grandmothers stayed because they valued family. Your generation leaves because you value alimony. Don’t confuse gold digging with empowerment… strength isn’t measured by how much wealth you walk away with.”

Dozzy also noted: “You’re oversimplifying the past. Our grandmothers didn’t stay just because they were helpless, many held families and communities together with real strength. Acting like modern progress is simply leaving and collecting a man’s assets is just materialism.”

Smile said: “Your mom might be unemployed but most mothers I see then, were employed. You mom might be uneducated but most mothers close to me were educated, the only valid thing you said was having kids, coupled with not wanting to share kpekus up and down, unlike new generations.

“Walking away with a man’s wealth is only possible because the man wants it, possibly he is a simp which I have no pity for and the men of power allowed it. A man that doesn’t want you to take his wealth, knows what to do, especially in Nigeria. Not all men are Simpson.”
