Why I prefer to raise kids in Nigeria – M.I Abaga

Nigerian rapper and music executive M.I Abaga has stated that he would prefer to raise his future children in Nigeria, citing the country’s deep sense of family and community as his reason.

In a recent interview, the hip-hop star explained that Nigeria provides a more supportive environment for raising children than many Western nations.

According to him, the communal lifestyle in Nigeria plays a vital role in parenting, as relatives and neighbours are often willing to lend a helping hand.

M.I noted that growing up in such an environment helps children develop a stronger sense of identity and belonging.

Nigerian values vis-a-vis abroad comfort

He added that while life abroad may offer comfort and opportunities, the warmth of Nigerian family values is something he would not trade for anything.

He said …

“There are a lot of things appealing about home, especially because we’re already ingrained in that system. There’s a lot of support as well. I feel it’s very difficult for parents here.

“But if you have family, now you have enough people that can stay at home and support you. But it’s not easy, man.”

MI contrasts life home and abroad

M.I Abaga contrasted this with life abroad, particularly in the United States, where he observed that many people work long hours and family members are often unavailable to provide support.

While acknowledging the appeal of raising children overseas, the rapper maintained that Nigeria offers a stronger foundation for kids to understand their roots and culture before being exposed to life abroad.

He added that although he is not yet making concrete family plans, Nigeria’s close-knit culture remains one of its greatest strengths, especially in nurturing children within a supportive community.
