Veteran Yoruba Nollywood actor and producer Olaide Olabanji, popularly known as Laiban, has opened up about a surprising clash with his movie marketer over a brand new car gift worth over N850,000.
Speaking in an interview with Oyinmomo TV, Laiban explained that the gift actually made him angry instead of happy.
He said the strange fight happened many years ago after one of his movies made strong sales.
Four days after dropping the movie, his marketer called and asked him to follow him to Berger.
Back then, Laiban explained, when marketers made a lot of sales, the first thing on their mind was to buy a new car.
So he thought he was just going along to help pick a car for the marketer.
They went to different car lots, and Laiban helped choose a Mazda 626.
The car came fully fitted with AC, and they bought it for over N850,000.
But on their way back, the marketer congratulated him and said the car was actually a gift for Laiban.
Instead of feeling joy, Laiban got very angry and stepped out of the car. The confused marketer started apologizing, asking what he did wrong.
Laiban then explained his real problem. He said his plan was to take the money from the successful movie and use it to produce two more films, not to own a new car.
When the marketer asked what he wanted instead, Laiban asked for N1 million cash. The marketer finally gave him N1.2 million.
The actor said he fought for his business growth, not out of pride. He needed more movies, not just one new ride.
His words: “Four days after dropping my movie, my marketer called me and asked me to follow him to Berger. In those days, whenever marketers made a lot of sales on a movie, the first thing that came to their mind was to get a new car. So I thought I only needed to accompany him to buy a new car. We went to the car lots, and he asked me to help him pick one. I chose a Mazda 626 for him. It was fully fitted with AC, and we got it for over N850,000. While we were going back home, he congratulated me in the vehicle and told me that the car was for me. I got angry and got out of the car. He started apologizing and asked what he did wrong. So I told him that my intention was to get money from the movie we did that made a lot of sales and use it to produce two other movies, not to buy a car. He then asked what I wanted, and I told him I needed money instead, N1 million. He gave me N1.2 million.”
