According to a report by London Evening Standard on Thursday March 5, 2026, Arsenal supporters may want to start noting key dates, as the race for the Premier League title has shifted significantly in their favour.
A dramatic round of matches has strengthened Arsenal’s position at the top of the table. The Gunners earned a narrow but crucial victory away at Brighton, extending their lead to seven points over Manchester City, who were forced to settle for a 2–2 draw against Nottingham Forest.
An early strike from Bukayo Saka proved decisive against Brighton & Hove Albion, although Arsenal’s performance was far from attacking. After taking the lead, Mikel Arteta’s side appeared content to slow the game down and protect their advantage rather than push forward.
Despite going into the break ahead, Arsenal recorded an expected goals (xG) figure of only 0.01 during the first half and did not manage their second shot on target until the 88th minute. Goalkeeper David Raya also went to ground multiple times, seemingly exaggerating injuries to run down the clock.
Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler criticised the approach after the match, saying he would “never try to win in that way” and suggesting Arsenal simply do whatever suits them.
Although Manchester City still have a game in hand, they must host Arsenal at the Etihad Stadium on April 19, meaning the title race is no longer entirely in their control.
City twice moved ahead against relegation-threatened Nottingham Forest through goals from Antoine Semenyo and Rodri. However, Morgan Gibbs‑White and Elliot Anderson equalised on both occasions to deny the defending champions a win.
With eight matches left to play for Arsenal and nine remaining for City, the closing stages of the season will determine whether the North London club can finally secure the title.
