“What’s the worst…” — Lady sparks over filing of income tax report to government

A Nigerian lady has sparked heated reactions online after a viral video showed her openly questioning the relevance of paying taxes amid worsening economic conditions in the country.

In the widely circulated clip, the visibly frustrated woman challenged the government’s demand for tax compliance, arguing that many citizens see little or no benefit from public spending.

Outburst Over Tax Filing

Expressing her anger, she asked, “What is the worst that will happen if we don’t file our income tax to the government?”

She went further to question transparency, saying, “Why should I report my income to the government? Is the government reporting their own income to me?”

Her comments reflect a growing sentiment among some Nigerians who feel disconnected from government policies and outcomes.

Complaints About Living Conditions

The lady highlighted the rising cost of living and declining public services, stating, “The last time I checked, you don’t give 24 hours light… we don’t have good roads… we do not have access to good medicals.”

She also compared past and present prices to emphasise the economic strain on citizens. According to her, “Fuel was ₦200, now it is ₦1,500… dollar was ₦500, now it is almost ₦2,000.”

Continuing, she lamented the surge in food and housing costs, saying, “A bag of rice was ₦10,000, now it is ₦100,000… a one-room apartment used to be ₦500,000, now it’s going for ₦4 million or ₦5 million.”

Criticism of Government Accountability

The woman did not hold back in criticising public officials, arguing that taxpayers deserve accountability. She said, “Of what benefit have you been to me to demand access to my money?”

While clarifying her stance, she added that taxation itself is not the issue, noting, “It’s not as if paying taxes is a bad thing… working countries do pay taxes.”

However, she stressed her distrust in leadership, stating, “We do not want to pay taxes to a government that is looting and delivering nothing on their promises.”

Call for Public Reaction

In a strong closing remark, she urged Nigerians to speak up, asking, “Why are we all silent? Why are we all quiet?”

She concluded with a defiant tone, saying, “If we don’t pay these taxes, what is the worst that is going to happen? Because I’m tired of keeping quiet.”
