VP Shettima departs Nigeria for Brazil to represent Tinubu at UN COP30

Vice President Kashim Shettima has departed Abuja for Brazil, where he will represent President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the 30th session of the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP30).

The global event, hosted by Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in collaboration with international partners, will take place from November 6 to 7 in Belém, the capital of Pará State in the Brazilian Amazon.

The conference aims to strengthen global cooperation in tackling the pressing challenges of climate change.

Nigeria to Push for Climate Action and Justice

At COP30, Vice President Shettima will join world leaders, international organisations, development partners, and top business executives to discuss the theme “Climate Action and Implementation.”

The discussions will focus on adaptation measures, sustainable forest management, biodiversity protection, and achieving climate justice for vulnerable nations.

Nigeria’s delegation is expected to advocate for fair global financing mechanisms, renewable energy investment, and technological support for developing countries most affected by climate change.

Strengthening Nigeria–Brazil Relations

Following his participation in the COP30 sessions, Vice President Shettima will travel to Brasília for a bilateral visit to his Brazilian counterpart, Vice President Geraldo Alckmin.

The visit is in response to Alckmin’s historic three-day trip to Nigeria in June, aimed at enhancing cooperation in trade, agriculture, and clean energy development between both countries.

Nigeria’s Climate Address

On his first day in Belém, Senator Shettima will attend the leaders’ general plenary, where he is expected to deliver Nigeria’s national climate action address.

His presentation will highlight the Tinubu administration’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions, promoting renewable energy, and protecting Nigeria’s rich natural environment.

Through his participation, Nigeria seeks to reaffirm its role as a key African voice in the global climate dialogue and strengthen international partnerships for sustainable growth.
