Vice Chancellor orders arrest of UNIPORT students for violating school’s sign-out ban

A lady and several other students of the University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) have been arrested on the orders of the Vice Chancellor for violating the school’s ban on sign-out activities.

A viral video shared on X (formerly Twitter) has stirred mixed reactions after showing the moment some final-year students were arrested for taking part in a sign-out celebration, despite a clear warning from the university management against it.

Lady arrested

In the video, a vehicle believed to belong to the campus security was seen as some men dragged a lady into it. Another male student was also arrested alongside others during the operation.

Other students arrested

While the arrests were ongoing, several students who had also participated in the sign-out activity were seen running and looking for places to hide.

Evidence of sign-out activity on campus

Evidence in the video shows the arrested students were wearing white shirts covered with signatures — a common tradition among final-year students celebrating the completion of their studies.

Public reactions

The video has sparked numerous reactions as an X user, Rarebreed wrote: “If it’s prohibited, don’t do it! We like breaking laws in Nigeria and cry when punished. Why did he wear it knowing it’s prohibited?

“Why it’s prohibited should be a whole different discussion but long as it’s already prohibited, avoid it! Arrest may be too extreme thoh.”

Izkindc wrote: “If na some school whey touch Dey the student head them go beat security and beat VC join.

“Signing out is not part of the educational system but it is a custom and heritage of the students you can’t just take it away by arresting them what happens to you organizing and coordinating them?”

DA said: “Arresting students for wearing white T-shirts at sign-out? Either the VC’s power trip is getting serious or the school’s more focused on control than education.”

Smiling dude said: “I think universities and higher institutions should ban this menace called sign out. The unnecessary revelry and partying is becoming a huge disturbance in this country. At times, I feel embarrassed when I see young people making a deal for the barest minimum cus of sign out.”
