The Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, SAN, has described the institution’s 50th anniversary celebration as a resounding success, praising the organising committee for what he called a “fantastic outing” widely applauded within and beyond the academic community.
Prof. Egbewole gave the commendation on March 23, 2026, while receiving members of the University’s 50th Anniversary Committee led by its Chairman, Olugbenga Mokuolu, who presented a comprehensive report detailing the activities and outcomes of the Golden Jubilee celebration.
Speaking at the Vice Chancellor’s Committee Room, the Vice Chancellor lauded the committee’s dedication, meticulous planning and collaborative spirit, noting that the series of programmes effectively showcased the university’s rich history, achievements and future aspirations. He added that lessons learned from the planning and execution would serve as valuable guides for future milestone events.
Egbewole also highlighted the strong goodwill enjoyed by the university, describing it as a hidden strength that became evident through the overwhelming support, participation and commendations from alumni, partners and well-wishers during the anniversary.
Earlier, Prof. Mokuolu commended the University Council led by Surveyor Abiodun Aluko, the Vice Chancellor and other principal officers for entrusting the committee with the responsibility of delivering the landmark celebration. He noted that the confidence reposed in the team motivated members to ensure excellence in execution.
Mokuolu further appreciated the contributions of provosts, deans, directors, staff, students, alumni and friends of the university, stressing that the success of the six-day, activity-packed celebration was driven by collective commitment and inclusiveness across all segments of the institution. He added that the programmes were not only designed to celebrate past achievements but also to project a clear vision for the university’s future growth and global relevance.
The committee chairman also advocated the establishment of a Project Implementation Committee to drive key legacy projects identified during the celebration, including the proposed Innovation and Transcript Hubs. He revealed that early planning—about 16 months ahead—played a crucial role in the success recorded, alongside the participation of notable figures such as Patrick Loch Otieno Lumumba, whose keynote address added intellectual depth to the anniversary colloquium.
