The United States has revoked the visa of Nobel laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka.
Wole Soyinka disclosed this during a parley at Kongi’s Harvest Gallery in Freedom Park, Lagos Island.
US Revokes Wole Soyinka’s Visa
At the conference, Wole Soyinka stated that he is unaware of any wrongdoing that could have led to the revocation.
“It is necessary for me to hold this conference so that people in the United States who are expecting me for this event or that event do not waste their time.I have no visa; I am banned, obviously, from the United States“,He firmly stated.
US Begins Revoking Visa
Notably, the revocations have sparked concerns over a potential shift in US visa policy towards Nigerian nationals, with analysts pointing to longstanding scrutiny of visa applicants from high-migration countries.
The US Embassy in Nigeria has cited Section 221(i) of the Immigration and Nationality Act, which gives the Secretary and Consular Officers discretion to revoke visas at any time.
Additionally, the United States has introduced new developments in its visa changes, which include reducing visa validity from 5 years to 3 months for Nigerian citizens, with single-entry visas now being issued.
It’s worth noting that prior to the revocation, Wole Soyinka has been vocal about his criticism of Donald Trump’s administration.
Recall that he publicly tore up his US Green Card in 2016 as a protest against Trump’s policies.
