The United States has made headlines following its government shutdown, the first in six years.

This follows after President Donald Trump imposed a 100% tariff on movies produced outside the country.

US Government Shuts Down

The shutdown stemmed from US lawmakers’ inability to reach a funding agreement before the deadline at midnight on September 30, 2025.

The dispute centers around Democrats pushing to extend Affordable Care Act subsidies, which lower health insurance costs for millions, while Republicans insist on debating the issue separately from government funding.

This impasse led to the federal government shutdown at 12:01 a.m. on October 1, 2025.

Meanwhile, President Donald Trump is yet to address the shutdown, and no official statement has been released from the White House.

However, this marks the second government shutdown under Donald Trump’s administration.

The first shutdown occurred in January 2018 and lasted for three days, from January 20 to January 22, due to disputes over funding for the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) immigration policy and Trump’s proposed border wall.

Consequences of US government shutdown include;

Reduced Consumer Spending: Consumer confidence often declines, leading to reduced spending and investment, which can slow economic growth.

– Increased Borrowing Costs: Credit rating agencies might reassess the nation’s sovereign ratings, potentially raising borrowing costs.

Stock Market Volatility: Prolonged uncertainty may increase stock market volatility as investors assess potential impacts on corporate operations and earnings.

-National Parks and Monuments: Closure or limited access to national parks and monuments, impacting local economies reliant on tourism.
