Nasarawa State Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources has raised the alarm over the growing environmental hazards caused by unregulated mining activities in the state. Officials warned that unchecked mining operations are negatively affecting public health, agricultural practices, and local ecosystems.
Princess Margaret Elayo, Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, made the disclosure on Friday during a briefing in Lafia, the state capital. She noted that her ministry has observed increasing challenges linked to unsafe mining practices.
“The government is aware of the escalating environmental issues resulting from unregulated mining, including soil erosion, deforestation, water contamination, and the loss of arable land,” Princess Elayo stated.
She added that the state government is taking steps to promote responsible and sustainable mining practices. “We are strengthening collaboration with miners, traditional institutions, and host communities to ensure that mining activities meet approved environmental standards,” the Commissioner said.
Elayo also revealed that a state-wide environmental inspection and monitoring exercise will soon commence across all mining sites. “This initiative is aimed at guiding operators, not intimidating or punishing them, to ensure compliance with best environmental practices,” she said.
The Commissioner called on miners and community leaders to cooperate with government teams, adopt eco-friendly mining methods, and help restore degraded lands while protecting vital water resources.
She further warned that unchecked mining activities by federal authorities are creating serious infractions, which could increase insecurity at mining sites if not addressed.
